An intermediate-level course for students with a solid foundation in ceramics. Students will develop more advanced techniques, refine their forms, experiment with new approaches, and work toward more ambitious and resolved pieces.
Prerequisite: Completion of two or more foundational courses at the studio, or equivalent experience.

Explore the expressive possibilities of clay in this four-week handbuilding course led by Toronto ceramic artist Raj Bharaj. Through a variety of handbuilding techniques, you'll discover the possibilities of form, texture, and surface while creating both sculptural and functional ceramic pieces.

Our Foundation Ceramics Classes are designed to give you a strong and well-rounded introduction to working with clay. Available as six- or nine-week courses, these classes offer time to develop your skills, explore different approaches to making, and gain confidence working independently in the studio.
Through a combination of handbuilding and wheel throwing, you’ll learn the fundamentals of working with clay—from preparing and shaping your pieces to trimming, joining, decorating, glazing, and preparing work for the kiln. You’ll be introduced to essential techniques while exploring both functional and sculptural forms, with guidance throughout the process.
The longer format gives you the opportunity to practice, experiment, and learn from the process rather than rushing from one project to the next. As your skills develop, you’ll have more freedom to explore your own ideas and begin developing a personal approach to working with clay.

Join Raj for a four-week exploratory handbuilding pottery course at our Barton location, designed to encourage creativity, experimentation, and a little bit of play. TEEN CLASS WITH CLARA

Our Teen Foundations Pottery Class is led by Clara, a gentle and knowledgeable ceramic artist who brings a thoughtful, encouraging approach to teaching. With a focus on building confidence through hands-on making, Clara creates a supportive space where teens can explore clay, experiment with different techniques, and develop their own creative ideas.
Students will be introduced to foundational ceramics skills, including handbuilding, shaping, joining, surface decoration, and glazing, while learning how to approach clay with patience and curiosity. Clara encourages students to try new things, develop their technical skills, and discover what comes naturally to them as makers.
Whether they are completely new to pottery or already have some experience with clay, teens will have the opportunity to create functional and sculptural work while developing greater confidence in their abilities. Clara’s calm guidance and passion for ceramics make this class a welcoming place for young makers to learn, experiment, and begin developing their own artistic voice.

Ceramic Glaze Workshop
A hands-on deep dive into glaze theory, formulation, testing, and experimentation.
Over two sessions, explore the chemistry and creative possibilities of ceramic glazes through a combination of theory and hands-on lab work. Working individually and in groups, you’ll formulate and test four base glazes: a stable high-gloss clear, a stable matte clear, a crackling/crazing glaze, and a crawling or “molten island” glaze.
You’ll also experiment with colourants, learn practical strategies for glaze testing and iteration, and develop effective methods for recording and evaluating your results. The workshop concludes with a review of the group’s test results and discoveries.
The workshop is limited to 10 students and will be led jointly by Noël Yardley and Evan.
